Guidelines for blog post contributors:

  1. Be on-topic!

We welcome posts related in some way to the topic of Agroecology. Our current working definition of Agroecology is:

Agroecology encompasses a science, a practice and a movement. It starts with the application of both ecological and human rights principles to the practice of agriculture and landscape management. The tenets of agroecology are rooted in indigenous and local knowledge gained through a strong connection to the land, ecosystems, and to food as a cultural resource. More details in this post here. 2. Categories for posts: We have so far envisioned space for posts in the following categories. If you have an idea that isn’t here, let us know!

    1. Updates on work, research, projects: (300 - 1,000 words)

      • photos, data visuals, etc. are encouraged!

    2. Commentary on articles, books, films, conferences, other events, etc.:

      (400 - 3,500 words)

    3. Opinion pieces on the state of the field, or on a subtopic in the field:

      (1,000 - 3,500 words)

    4. Crowd-sourcing suggestions or problem-solving: (300 - 1,000 words)

    5. Tips to share with others: (400 - 2,000 words)

    6. Creative writing and art: (400 - 2,500 words, or visual format)

  3. Correct grammar and spelling

Strive for correct spelling and grammar. However, as this is a blog, posting with minor errors is acceptable. If a post has enough errors such that it is distracting or makes the writing difficult to understand, it will be sent back to the writer for corrections.

  1. Be thoughtful and kind in posts that include critique or debate

Posts that critique another's ideas are welcomed. These could be a follow-up on a previous post on this blog, a commentary about a piece published elsewhere or a conference presentation, etc.

However:

Opinion pieces should aim for furthering our collective discussion in the field. Bringing light to new areas, suggesting improvements in methods or analysis, or sharing data that another writer may not have been aware of is encouraged.

Reviewers will look for submissions that are thoughtful, add to the conversation, and overall exemplify kindness.

  1. Citations

Citations or links to the original source of an idea or data are expected when appropriate. As this is a blog, no one single format is required. Hyperlinks to sources, including journal articles are acceptable.

If a source you are referencing is behind a paywall that not everyone would be able to access, make sure readers do not have to read the article in order to understand your post.

  2. Invite comments!

Authors are encouraged to invite conversation around their posts. This can often be done by including questions to readers in the post, in particular at the end.
